Sorry to see anyone die but I’ve lost my

loved ones way too early & they didn’t

have millions of dollars to throw away

on stupid things so forgive me but I

have no sympathy for this man. He might

have been a great entertainer but I was

never ‘thrilled’ in fact I didn’t care

for his music or himself at all! I think

MJ & Mtv is the reason music is in such

horrible state today! thank God all my

‘real rock band’s are still around &

playing & didn’t need MTV showing some

hour long video 5 times an hour to

achieve the loyalty of real rock fans!

  • Like millions of teenage white kids in 1983, I picked up this cassette (you young’ns may not be too familiar with that word) on the strength of a hat trick of powerful singles – “The Girl Is Mine” (a happy/sunny infectious pseudo-ballad duet w/ Paul McCartney), “Billie Jean” (it wasn’t quite disco, wasn’t quite funk, wasn’t quite new wave, wasn’t quite R&B, but somehow managed to be all those things, and you COULDN’T GET IT OUT OF YOUR HEAD), and “Beat It” (along with “Billie Jean”, arguably one of the ten best singles of the 1980’s, and still the closest thing to metal Michael’s ever done). I expected the remainder of it to equally blow me away, but I was sorely disappointed in that regard. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”? Sounds like a slightly more grown-up version of the playground chant, “na-na-na-na-boo-boo, you can’t catch me”. “Human Nature”? Pure adult contemporary schmaltz. “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”? Me neither. The only other track on the album that I thought rose to the heights of those first three singles was the title track, and with each single that was pumped out from this album, I kept wondering, “Why the heck don’t they release `Thriller’?” They finally did in December of ‘83, a year after the album came out, accompanied by what is still considered by many to be the greatest rock video ever made. I felt vindicated when the song managed to crack the Top Five, despite being on an album that was now practically issued with new babies along with their birth certerficates and social security numbers the moment they exited the womb. But four great songs does not make a great album, and the remaining tunes – eh, I could just do without them. In fact, the only other tune on it I really liked was one of the two tunes that WASN’T released as a single – the generic but pleasantly swinging “Baby Be Mine”.

This is the number one selling album of all time, I believe. I’m not into pop, but I bought it ’cause my daughter wanted it…
